For 35mm and 16mm film scans we use the Black Magic Design Cintel Scanners that offer 4k scanning at up to 30fps which allows us to scan up to 4k DPX files. We offer industry leading scanning with resolutions of 4k, 2k, HD & SD across 35mm and 16mm film formats.
This service captures each frame of film to its own file, or to frames of a movie file format such as QuickTime. The result is a significantly higher-quality image which allows greater flexibility in post production.
2K 4K Scanning resolution: 2K film scanning results in 2,048 horizontal pixels per scan line. Super 35mm film frame (1.33:1) at 2K results in a resolution of 2048 x 1536. A 3-perf 35mm film frame (1.77:1) produces 2048 x 1157. Both are considered 2K. 4K, known also as Ultra HD produces film at a resolution of 3840 x 2160.
Output Options: Once the scanning process is complete, your film can be output in a variety of formats to suit your requirements as follows:
- DPX (both 2K and 4K)
- DCI – DCP both 2K and 4K
- HD file formats
- All common editorial and mezzanine file formats, ProRes, H.264, QT
Color Grading: Scans are delivered as “flat,” meaning no color correction is applied to the image on capture. The advantage of doing a flat scan is that you don't “bake” color-correction decisions, which you may want to change later, into the digital files. This gives you more flexibility in post production.
