Artwork TIFF Preservation Masters

TIFF is widely used for high-quality still-image masters because it can preserve image data without lossy compression.

A preservation master can act as the source from which smaller access JPEGs, PDFs or other derivatives are created. The exact TIFF specification should be agreed at project level.

Standards context: The National Archives notes TIFF as a popular lossless-capable image format and recommends lossless compression where compression is used. citeturn0search1

Artwork TIFF masters

The capture method should be selected around the original object, its condition and the purpose of the digital master. Suitable material may be captured with a WideTEK 36 ART, reprographic camera system or flatbed solution, while delicate, oversized or surface-sensitive work may require a non-contact approach.
