Floppy disks were initially introduced as 8-inch (203 mm) media and later became widely available in 5¼-inch and 3½-inch sizes. They were an important form of data storage from the mid-1970s, with computers increasingly being manufactured without floppy disk drives from the mid-2000s.
Also known as a floppy, diskette or simply disk, the format uses a thin magnetic storage medium enclosed within a protective rectangular casing. Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive (FDD).
