Guillotine Preparation
Suitable books can be guillotined through the spine so the printed pages are separated for production scanning. This is a destructive method, so the original binding is not retained.

High-volume digitisation for published books, back catalogues and bulk orders. Suitable volumes can be guillotined at the spine and converted into loose pages for efficient batch scanning.
Discuss Your Bulk OrderOur published-book service is designed for projects where multiple printed volumes need to be converted into consistent digital files. It is particularly suitable for publishers, universities, libraries, archives and organisations working through sizeable collections or back catalogues.
For suitable books, removing the binding by guillotining the spine allows the resulting sheets to be batch fed through high-volume scanning equipment. This can provide a practical route for larger quantities where preserving the physical binding is not required.

Once prepared, loose pages can be processed as batches, making the workflow suitable for larger orders and repeated digitisation programmes.
Files can be supplied as archival TIFF, publication TIFF, PDF/A or searchable PDF, with OCR and Word conversion available where required.
Published books can vary considerably in size, pagination, print quality and condition. Before scanning, we can review the books and agree the preparation method, page size, resolution, file format and delivery requirements.
Choose the output according to whether the project is intended for preservation, publication, access or searchable use.
Guillotining is not appropriate where the binding or physical volume needs to be preserved. In those cases, ask us about our non-destructive book scanning service using specialist equipment designed to digitise bound material without removing the spine.
Send us the approximate number of books, page counts, sizes and required digital formats. We can discuss the preparation method and provide a quotation for your bulk scanning project.

Where the original publication permits it, destructive scanning can provide a highly efficient workflow for larger quantities of published material. We can also discuss non-destructive capture where the original needs to be retained.
Depending on the project, digital masters and access files can be supplied in formats such as TIFF, JPEG and PDF, with OCR available where appropriate. Final specifications should be agreed before scanning begins.
