MEDIA QUESTIONS ABOUT STABILITY: How long will different media last before becoming unreadable? What priority should be given to migration or preservation of media?

We recommend that old and rare video tape should be converted at the soonest convenience. Not only can the tape become unstable due to degrading brought on by a number of factors including de-magnetisation or chemical breakdown, but the more pressing concern is the machinery available that can convert the tapes. These are becoming more rare by the year.
