What Is DVD-R Extraction?

Recovering video and data from recordable DVD-R media.

DVD-R is a recordable DVD format commonly used for video, photographs, documents and computer backups. The disc may be authored as DVD-Video or used as a data carrier.

DVD-R characteristics

Recordable DVDs can be less stable over time than pressed optical media. National Archives guidance therefore recommends assessing the need to reformat optical-media holdings.

DVD-Video and data structures

Identify whether the DVD-R is an authored DVD-Video or a data disc before extraction.

Reading ageing discs

For preservation, retain the original directory or authored structure where possible and create access files separately.

Disc images

Check all expected files and sectors rather than assuming a successful mount means complete recovery.

Quality control

Document errors, checksums, file counts and any recovery limitations.

Oxford Duplication Centre: DVD-R collections should be prioritised according to value, condition and accessibility risk.

Reference guidance: This article is informed by optical-media preservation guidance from the U.S. National Archives and the Library of Congress Recommended Formats Statement. Where appropriate, the article distinguishes preservation guidance from practical extraction procedures.
