Your history matters

Keep family stories safe for the next generation

Family documents are often irreplaceable. A handwritten letter, a grandparent’s diary, a birth certificate, military papers or an old family business ledger can hold memories and details that are impossible to recreate if the original is lost or damaged. Paper can fade, become brittle, suffer water damage or simply become difficult to organise and access.

Creating high-quality digital copies helps reduce the need to handle delicate originals and makes it easier to organise records, share them with relatives and support family-history research. Digital files are not a substitute for caring for the originals, but they provide another useful way to protect and access their information.

A careful, considered process

Respect for originals, clarity in every digital copy

Not every family archive is the same. Some collections contain robust loose papers; others include fragile pages, old bindings, annotations, folds or faded handwriting. We can discuss the condition and format of your material before recommending an appropriate scanning approach.

  • Non-destructive handling: suitable methods for bound volumes and delicate papers, depending on their condition and format.
  • High-quality master files: TIFF outputs at 600dpi are available for suitable document projects, supporting detailed preservation and future reuse.
  • Convenient access copies: PDF, searchable PDF/OCR and JPEG options can make everyday viewing, sharing and retrieval easier.
  • Organised delivery: agree file formats and delivery arrangements with our team so the digital collection suits how your family intends to use it.

The best resolution and output format depend on the material, condition, intended use and project requirements. We will discuss these with you before work begins.

From a few pages to a family archive

What can we digitise?

We support personal and family collections of different sizes, from a small group of treasured papers to a substantial archive gathered over many generations.

  • Family letters and correspondence
  • Birth, marriage and other family-history certificates
  • Diaries, journals and memoirs
  • Military records, service papers and historical documents
  • Family business records, ledgers and account books
  • Newspaper cuttings, scrapbooks and photograph albums
  • School records, certificates, maps and plans
  • Fragile papers, manuscripts and bound volumes, subject to assessment

We can also help with other family media, including photographs, slides, negatives, cine film, audio tapes and video tapes, helping you bring more of your family archive into digital form.

Preserve now, plan for the future

Digital preservation is more than scanning

Once your collection is digitised, keep at least two copies in separate places, use clear file names and folders, and periodically check that files can still be opened. For especially important family records, maintain a simple inventory and include dates or descriptions where known. These straightforward habits help make your digital archive more useful over time.

We can supply preservation-oriented files alongside convenient access copies, depending on the project. Tell us whether your priority is family sharing, reading faded text, printing, research or creating a long-term digital record, and we can help you choose suitable outputs.
