Corporate & Heritage Photographic Film Digitisation

Specialist digitisation for valuable photographic archives — from corporate image libraries and industrial records to museum, university, library and heritage collections. We work with a broad range of film formats and film bases, including nitrate, acetate and polyester.

Specialist archive digitisation

Preserving photographic evidence, knowledge and history

Photographic film can document the development of a business, the work of an institution, the history of a place or the story of a community. These collections may include engineering and construction records, product and advertising photography, research images, press photographs, architectural records, archaeological documentation and historic negatives.

Digitisation creates dependable digital surrogates for research, reference, publication and wider access, while helping reduce the need to handle original material. Each project can be planned around the collection’s formats, condition, intended use and delivery requirements.

Understand the original material

Nitrate, acetate and polyester film

Film base is an important part of understanding a photographic collection. Different generations of film may need different handling, assessment and storage considerations. If the base is uncertain, we recommend discussing the material with us before dispatch.

Example of historical cellulose nitrate photographic film

Cellulose nitrate film

Used in many early photographic and motion-picture materials, nitrate film is historically significant but can become unstable as it deteriorates. Its condition may change over time, so identification and appropriate handling are essential.

Collection examples: early negatives, historic institutional photography and legacy photographic records.

Example of cellulose acetate photographic film and negatives

Cellulose acetate film

Acetate film replaced nitrate in many uses and appears in extensive twentieth-century collections. It can suffer from deterioration often called vinegar syndrome, which may cause shrinkage, distortion, odour and changes to the film support.

Collection examples: company records, press negatives, research photography and historic image libraries.

Example of polyester-base photographic film

Polyester film

Polyester is a dimensionally stable film base used in many later photographic materials. It is often encountered in modern archival collections and can be found alongside older film types within the same archive.

Collection examples: later institutional negatives, technical photography and mixed-generation archives.

Important preservation note: deteriorating nitrate and acetate materials may require specialist assessment and handling. Do not attempt to clean, flatten, cut or repair fragile film yourself. Contact us to discuss the material and its condition before sending it.

Formats we can discuss

Corporate and heritage photographic film types

Collections often contain more than one format. We can help review the range of materials and agree a suitable digitisation workflow for the project.

35mm photographic slides and negative strips

35mm slides and negatives

Colour transparencies, black-and-white negatives, colour negatives, mounted slides and strip film from corporate, press, research and heritage collections.

Medium format photographic negatives and transparencies

Medium-format film

120 and 220 roll film, including professional, studio, architectural and institutional photography where detail and tonal reproduction are important.

Historic glass plate negatives and lantern slides

Glass plates and lantern slides

Historic glass plate negatives, positive glass slides and lantern slides that may form part of museum, library, research or local-history collections.

Large-format sheet film negatives and transparencies

Large-format sheet film

Sheet film and transparencies in a range of sizes, including architectural, industrial, scientific and high-detail photographic records.

Historic colour and black and white photographic film

Colour and black-and-white film

Positive and negative film in colour or monochrome, with capture and processing decisions tailored to the material and the project brief.

Specialist photographic film formats from a heritage archive

Specialist and mixed collections

Unusual or mixed photographic formats, including collections where film types, sizes and generations need to be identified and grouped before scanning.

A project-specific approach

From collection assessment to digital delivery

We agree the intended outcome and technical requirements before processing begins, helping ensure that the resulting files suit the collection’s future use.

Assess

Review the formats, quantity, condition and any known film-base or preservation concerns.

Prepare

Organise material for capture and agree any handling, sequence or naming requirements.

Digitise & quality-check

Use an appropriate capture workflow, with agreed colour, tonal and image-quality checks.

Deliver

Supply agreed master and access files with a clear folder structure and naming approach.

Digital file options

Delivery can be tailored to access, research, publication or preservation needs. Depending on the project, options may include:

  • TIFF for high-quality, uncompressed master images.
  • JPEG for convenient access, sharing and everyday use.
  • RAW or specialist capture outputs where agreed and appropriate to the workflow.
  • Consistent file naming and folder structures to support collection management.

Projects we support

  • Corporate image libraries and historical business records.
  • Museum, gallery and heritage photographic archives.
  • University, research and institutional collections.
  • Architectural, engineering, industrial and site photography.
  • Press, publication and commercial photographic collections.
  • Collections combining historic and modern film bases.
